FAQs

Is the program fully online, in person, or a mix of both?

The program is 100% virtual/online, with a mix of asynchronous coursework and live, synchronous sessions.

What is the program outline/structure, and how does it differ from the mentor/mentee program?

The National Fellows Program is a workforce development training program that aims to provide Fellows with the knowledge and skills to be successful in the national security field.

The program runs in 8, 3-week modules. Week 1 is dedicated to asynchronous learning on our e-learning platform, while the other 2 weeks are dedicated to interactive learning in live, synchronous Zoom sessions with the larger cohort as well as breakout sessions with smaller teams of Fellows.

What is the expected weekly time commitment, and how long does the program run?

The program runs from October through May, with the estimated time commitment of 1.5-2 hours weekly, with synchronous sessions running twice every three weeks.

Are international participants eligible?

We are currently prioritizing US-based applicants due to timezone differences of synchronous sessions.

If we are applying to national security internships, are we still eligible?

Yes! Absolutely.

Is a letter of recommendation required or recommended?

While we would love to receive a letter of recommendation from all applicants, we understand that this is not always feasible for each applicant. Therefore, we strongly encourage recommendation letters, but do not penalize an applicant for not submitting a recommendation letter.

What are the benefits of this program?
  •  Fellows earn a Certificate of Completion they can highlight on resumes and applications.
  • Access to pathway opportunities, including scholarships for Google’s Cybersecurity Certificate.
  • Join a nationwide mentoring program and connect with professionals in the field.

  • Take part in a Design Thinking Challenge, pitching solutions to experts.
  • Gain visibility through Girl Security’s public engagements.
Does the program offer any coding opportunities?

The National Fellows program focuses on exposing Fellows to the wide range of sectors within the field. While coding may come up in program conversations, we do not specifically focus on coding skills as a teachable area. Upon completion of the program, we do invite alumni to participate in a range of opportunities through our Alumni Network, where we hope you will find continuing education opportunities that fit your particular interests.

Do you provide internship opportunities or job placement opportunities?

Our National Fellows Program is a workforce development training program. We aim to provide Fellows with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the national security field. At this time we do not offer direct internship opportunities or job placement services. However, upon completion of the program, alumni are invited to join the Girl Security Alumni Network, where we post new internship opportunities and job openings from mentors and organizations within our network.

Is there testing after lessons?

Our e-learning platform includes checks for understanding throughout the learning process that may include journal reflections or quick quizzes. The intention of these knowledge checks are to ensure that Fellows feel confident in their understanding of the material, and when they don’t- know what questions to ask during synchronous sessions. Therefore, we allow unlimited retakes of any knowledge checks and encourage Fellows to make note of the content they are struggling with to get more clarity on the topic(s) when our cohort has synchronous sessions scheduled.

Is a certificate of completion provided?

Yes, a certificate of completion is provided upon completion of the program.

Mentorship Changes Lives

The Girl Security Mentorship Program has supported hundreds of mentees across the United States to learn about, explore, and pursue national security careers.

"I really liked that this mentorship program gave me a safe space to explore the security field in greater depth and gave me the tools to explore my career options."
Nadia, Former Mentee

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Girl Security works with mentees ages 14–26 from across the United States and its territories, and we’re currently piloting a program to offer mentorship opportunities for mid-career mentees (aged 27+) as well. We pair mentees with women and gender-minority mentors from all sectors and experience levels across the national security field. Matches are based on shared professional interests, identities, and/or experiences.

WINTER 2026 SEASON

The Winter 2026 Season will run from January 12 to April 10, 2026.

APPLICATION PROCESS

The application process for mentors and mentees is currently closed.  Sign up for the newsletter to stay on top of updates and info about the next round of applications.

FAQs

What are the eligibility requirements to be a mentee in the program?

Eligible mentee candidates are ages 14-26, who reside in the United States and who have an interest in (or are curious about) national security. We also reserve a small part of our cohort for mid-career mentees who are aged 27+.

Is the program open to individuals outside of the United States?

We manage these situations on a case-by-case basis. For example, if you are a US citizen, but you attend school abroad, you may still be able to participate in the program. If you have a special circumstance, please contact us.

How long is each mentorship season?

Each mentorship season is three months long.

Throughout the three months, how often am I expected to engage with my mentor(s)?

The time commitment involves meeting with your mentor(s)at leastonce every two weeks, for a total ofat leastsix meaningful meetings together.

How do I communicate with my mentor(s)?

We understand that everyone has different preferences when it comes to communication. You can use whatever form of communication works best for you.

What can mentees expect to get out of the mentorship program?

Mentees have varying levels of experience and a wide range of interests. Some are looking for career guidance, professional development advice, job application assistance, etc. Others are just looking to learn more about the national security field to evaluate if it is for them. Generally, mentees fall into one of four categories:

  • Beginner/Just Exploring: This type of mentorship will support “beginner” mentees, those who are exploring national security as a concept and field of study for the first time.
  • Intermediate/Definitely Interested in the Field: This type of mentorship will support “intermediate” mentees who are sure of their interest in national security and are seeking guidance for how to prepare for a career in the field.
  • Accelerated/Career-Focused: This type of mentorship will support those who are career-focused and can benefit from direct insight from experienced professionals in their pathway.
  • Mid-Career: For those aged 27+ exploring career changes or seeking specific career advice.
How many mentors will I be assigned each season?

Generally, one mentor is matched with one mentee each season. Sometimes, we match a mentee with two mentors (a “mentor team”). Sometimes, we match a mentor with two mentees. The arrangement for each season depends on the number of participating mentees and mentors at the time, as well as the particular interests of each mentee. All of the arrangements have value and have resulted in excellent mentor/mentee relationships.

What if my mentor(s) and I are not able to build a rapport, or if it just isn’t a good match?

We do our best to use the information provided through the application process to match mentors and mentees who we think will get along and have a lot to talk about. However, sometimes the chemistry just isn’t there. That is ok. Let us know as soon as possible in the season, and we will make any necessary adjustments.

What resources are available to me as a mentee in the program?

As a mentee, you will have access to workshops and other events that we host to help you build knowledge and skills. You will also have the opportunity to connect with other mentees and build your network of people with related professional interests.

What if I have never been in a mentorship program before?

No problem! This is a great opportunity to learn and practice communication, networking, and connecting skills. A great mentee comes into this with an open mind and a willingness to learn and grow. We provide mentee orientation materials at the beginning of each season to get you started on the right foot.

I am worried that I won’t know how to start or keep up in a conversation with a mentor.

Don’t worry. The Girl Security Team will support you along the way, and will provide tips to give you ideas for how to start conversations, keep them going in a meaningful way, be an active listener, and build rapport with your mentor.

Does the mentorship program have a cost?

The program is entirely free! All you need to bring are your time, attention, and respect, and an open mindset.

Do I need to travel to meet my mentor(s)?

Nope! This mentorship program is designed to operate entirely virtually.

There are a lot of mentorship programs out there. What makes the Girl Security Mentorship Program different?

What makes our program different and special is that we emphasize “coaching-inspired mentorship”. This means that instead of focusing on giving advice, we equip our mentors to ask good questions, listen actively, share authentically, and empower their mentees to chart their own paths. Yes, there is a space for advice, but it isn’t the crux of the mentorship experience.

What does the application process involve? How long does it take to finish the process?

The application process involves a comprehensive intake form, in which you tell us about yourself, your interests, your preferences related to the program, and other information that helps us make a good match for you. It also involves the signing of the Girl Security Code of Conduct and Mentee Acknowledgement Form, and a supplementary piece of work in which you share a bit more about yourself and your interests in the national security field. The entire process generally takes a week or two.

Is there anything else involved in the application process?

At the completion of the process, you will be invited to join the Slack platform, which is the closed platform that we use for communications. A Slack account isrequired in order for you to be matched and to participate in the wider Girl Security community.

Do I need to reapply each season?

Yes. This is because personal information, circumstances, and interests tend to evolve. In order to make sure we are working with the most updated and accurate information, we require that mentees apply for each season in which they would like to participate in the program.

Is the mentorship program virtual or in-person?

The mentorship opportunity is created to function as a virtual program.

I have additional questions not covered here. How can I find out more?

We are happy to answer any additional questions you may have. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us

Not at all! Great mentors are people with experience to share who know how to do so in a mindful, open, and helpful manner. Girl Security provides mentor orientation materials and other resources to help new mentors find their own style and gain confidence in sharing what they have to offer and pulling out the best from their mentees.

Does Girl Security promote a political position or set of beliefs?

Not at all! Girl Security is a non-partisan, non-political organization. We welcome mentors from all backgrounds and all political and ideological perspectives. Our only requirement in this regard is that your approach to working with mentees aligns with our organizational values of respect, accountability, patience, supportiveness, inclusiveness, and fairness. Girl Security adheres to the belief that maintaining an anti-partisan approach creates a much-needed space for critical thinking and collaboration.

Being a part of this community allows mentors to expand their networks and have access to a range of professional resources, volunteer opportunities, mentoring support, event invitations, and other information.

Are mentors able to volunteer in other ways, aside from having a mentee match?

Yes! Most Girl Security mentors are so enthusiastic about our work that they offer to volunteer in other ways. Some of the ways that mentors contribute to our mission (aside from being in the formal mentorship program) are:

Does Girl Security provide any support throughout the mentorship?

Absolutely. Girl Security will match you and your mentee(s) and turn things over to you to build the relationship. We will always be there to answer any questions you may have or to iron out any issues that may arise. We check in occasionally throughout the mentorship season, and offer opportunities for feedback and socialization among mentors.
