Craig Newmark Philanthropies Commits $50,000 to National Security Program for Girls
Craig Newmark Philanthropies, the charitable organization led by craigslist founder Craig Newmark, has donated $50,000 to Girl Security to fund a new nationwide afterschool program to empower girls in national security. The National Girl Security Council (NGSC) will provide yearlong learning, skills-based training, and mentoring support to girls ages 9-19 nationwide on issues at the intersection of society, technology, and national security.
“As a nation, we are in national security crisis. This crisis represents the precise scenario Girl Security is empowering girls and women to face. Craig Newmark’s generous support will bolster Girl Security’s capacity to expand its impact during an important moment for our nation,” said founder and CEO Lauren Buitta. “From election security to disinformation to climate change, closing the gender gap in national security will ensure more diverse voices are involved in critical decision making on behalf of our nation, and the world. This is an urgent call to action.”
“Our country is under attack, and it’s all hands on deck to join in the fight,” Craig Newmark said. “We need everyone who’s capable to pitch in. Girl Security is part of the effort to rebuild our democracy.” IN addition to Girl Security, Craig Newmark Philanthropies funds Girls Who Code and the Girl Scouts cybersecurity.
The National Girl Security Council is Girl Security’s newest endeavor to provide innovative and accessible learning and training on national security issues affecting girls daily, while also furthering a first-of-its kind model to close the gender gap in national security. Newmark’s gift will fund trainings on disinformation, election security, presidential transitions, and post-election security as well as a Spring Girl Security innovation challenge and national essay contest.
