Girl Security is honored to announce that Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins, founder and president of Women of Color Advancing Peace, Security and Conflict Transformation (WCAPS) and ambassador with the U.S. Department of State (2009-2017) joins Girl Security as Honorary Advisor.

Since Girl Security’s founding, Ambassador Jenkins has been a valued partner and role model for Girl Security and the populations it serves. In addition to being Founder and Executive Director of WCAPS, Ambassador Jenkins is also a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. Jenkins is currently the Chair of the Steering Committee of the International Women’s Conference on Preventing the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction to Non-State Actors, and the Chair of the Committee on Radioactive Sources: Applications and Alternative Technologies of the National Academies of Sciences.

Ambassador Jenkins is an Adjunct Professor at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and a Professorial Lecturer at the George Washington Elliott School of International Affairs. She is Chair of the Women in National Security Law Committee with the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Law and National Security. She is also a Visiting Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania Schools of Nursing and Veterinary Science. She recently served as a Visiting Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perry World House and a Visiting Dignitary at the LBJ School at the University of Texas in Austin.

Girl Security’s mission aims to empower girls from diverse backgrounds in national security and to bring the diverse security experiences of girls to the foreground as part of a discussion about how to define “national security.” Through her involvement as Honorary Advisor and as a leader in the fight to dismantle systemic racism in national security as part of recent initiatives aimed at creating solidarity among national security groups, Ambassador Jenkins’ engagement with Girl Security as Honorary Advisor provides invaluable impact to the mission.
