What We Carry: An Artist Collaboration with Kayleigh MacDonald

In recognition of the 30th Anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act, Girl Security is collaborating with Kayleigh MacDonald for a series entitled What We Carry.

This campaign was inspired by the need to spotlight and interrogate the ways in which violence against girls, women, and gender minorities is both normalized and worsening with evolving threats arising from technology. It is intended to invite people to question the existence of a society in which girls, women and other groups must exist in a constant state of threat, and in turn, arm themselves in anticipation of harm.

For Girl Security, part of our mission is to advance an understanding of national security that recognizes the implications of violence against more than half of the population. We envision a world in which our collective understanding of security is shaped by those who experience systemic harm. Kayleigh’s work brought to life our mission in a way words have fallen short

As part of this campaign, we have created a social media expose, a series of implementable toolkits, and calls to action.

“Let’s look at them. Let’s talk about why carrying a weapon for self-protection is the norm for most women and gender minorities. That should not be normal. That should horrify you, and move you to question, to action.”
